Tale-pieces accompanied the 2009 exhibition devoted to the extraordinary British artist-engraver and naturalist Thomas Bewick (1753 – 1828). Bewick referred to his work as ‘tale-pieces’. Intended as illustrations of “some truth or point of some moral” they provide an invaluable insight into social history while also demonstrating the artist’s imagination and wit. Bewick’s images frequently reveal human frailties; one depicts a drunkard seeing two moons in the night sky; another shows a horse stopping on the bank of a river to avoid falling into the water, while his rider is oblivious.

Max Klinger accompanied the 2005 exhibition of Klinger's work. For Max Klinger (born 1857), printmaking, and specifically etching, was a major part of his artistic output. He insisted that this kind of work, drawn and monochrome, had the greatest potential for poetic invention and that painting, by contrast, was more suitable for the representation of the material world.

Portrait of the Artist: Käthe Kollwitz focuses on around forty works from the British Museum’s remarkable print collection, alongside material drawn from other UK public collections. The exhibition highlights the importance of Kollwitz’s work and celebrates the enduring impact of her powerful and affecting images. Käthe Kollwitz (née Schmidt, 1867–1945) was one of the leading artists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, notable for the emotional power of her drawing, printmaking and later sculpture.
