This catalogue accompanied Permindar Kaur's 18 May - 22 June 1996 exhibition Cold Comfort.
Permindar Kaur removed the domestic and familiar from their secure surroundings and transformed them to produce disquieting results. The experience of her work can be unnerving, like visiting a deserted house or abandoned institution. A tension is set up between is set up between the routine and the unfamiliar, the comforting and the alienating.
Feelings of containment and anxiety were explored through figures and domestic objects, some of which were enticing in their sensual beauty, while others produce feelings of entrapment. They offered a view into small, private worlds, as a means of temporary escape.
