This is the second volume documenting the various projects in Ikon’s off-site programme from 2002-2004. Taking place throughout the city and encompassing painting, performance, video, installation and sound, these projects characteristically conveyed a distinct unpreciousness about art, encouraging an understanding of the continuity between artistic experience and everyday life.
This catalogue profiles each of the artists featured with a short description of their practice and the projects they formulated. Largely based within the city, but also reaching further afield, the programme involved some fifty-five artists who developed over sixty individual projects, often in collaboration with local inhabitants. Situated in a range of places, from architectural landmarks that resonate within the city’s industrial past to more transitory, solitary spaces such as hotel rooms and taxi cabs, the projects aimed to facilitate the movement of art into everyday urban experience.
Also included in this publication are full colour photographs of each of the projects featured and an essay by Ikon Curator Helen Legg that touches on the meaning of Ikon’s mission – via the off-site programme – to ‘operate beyond the confines of its physical space’ in order to ‘articulate a sense of place’.
