This catalogue brings together different aspects of Amikam Toren's work. It accompanied a major exhibition that was seen in Birmingham in 1990, Bristol and partly in London. Amikam Toren questions the nature of art through its process.
In Toren’s case, the work consists of cheap oils on canvas, purchased by him from second-hand shops and markets, then defaced as he cuts a stencilled text into the picture plane. Like the paintings, the texts are ready-mades appropriated from graffiti and in sometimes offensive. When they were displayed at Ikon gallery the works were displayed in non gallery spaces for example the men's toilets. This challenged the works place in the world and its definition.
