This catalogue was made for the 30 July — 14 September 2003 "Sundaribai" Exhibition at Ikon Gallery.
As part of Birmingham City Council’s Arts Champion Scheme, Ikon Gallery worked with Erdington Town Centre Partnership to present the work of Indian artist Sundaribai. Shown in the UK for the first time at Ikon Gallery in summer 2003, the exhibition in unit 18, Central Square included of a series of wall mounted clay panels.
Consisting of painted clay sculptures and wall-mounted panels, this was the first solo exhibition of work by Indian artist Sundaribai outside of the South Asian sub-continent. Curated by Professor Jyotindra Jain (JNU, Delhi), it proposed a place for traditional craft within the context of an innovative contemporary art programme.
Sundaribai lives and works in Sirkotanga, a village in the Bihar region, west of Calcutta. With no formal training she learnt her practice from her mother – a symbolic style which conveys the nature of everyday life in South Asia. The works take inspiration from Indian folklore, religious festivals and everyday village life.
