Zarina Bhimji

Sale price £7.95 Regular price

This catalogue accompanied Zarina Bhimji's 1992 exhibition i will always be here.

“…performance of burning white sari, kurtan, teatowels. Searching for metaphors of skin, the feeling of skin deeply pierced, the burnings are placed in shoe boxes…”

Photographs and real objects merged, burnt cloth and withered offerings, ashes in glass boxes. The beauty of her images had a strange edge implying pain and silence, estrangement and displacement.

Zarina attended Goldsmiths’ College and the Slade School of Art. At the time of the 1992 exhibition, Bhimji was an artist in residence at the V&A Museum where she explored their “hidden” archives of Indian culture: silent histories with political overtones.
